# Prepare document fields

> Place fields on a Library document once, before it's attached to a package or template.

Preparing a Library document's fields opens the same [field editor](/guides/packages/fields-editor) used for packages, against the document on its own rather than a specific package's recipients. This lets you set up a document's fields once in the Library and reuse it.
